Raised temperature, shivering, chills and
feeling hot make up fever. It is a symptom,
not, as a lay person might think, a specific
illness such as scarlet fever or malaria.
Fever is very common with a wide variety of
causes. When a patient has a fever it means
that his body is fighting infection and that
he needs rest and where appropriate
anti-infective medicines. Normal temperature
is 37 oc Immediate treatment
• Rest in a worm ( not hot)
room
• Drink plenty of fluids
• Sponge the patient with tepid water if the
patient id 4O oc
When to
consult a doctor
• Immediately if baby has temperature over
40 oc
• If fever persist for more than three days
• If severe shacking, shivering and
chattering of teeth occur with fever. This
condition is called a rigor and should be
reported because it suggests pneumonia,
pyelonephritis and malaria.
